EDUC 5313- Week 1 Post

My name is Cecelia Vigil, but I prefer to go by Cece or Miss Vigil to my students. I am a fifth-grade teacher in Aurora, CO. I am currently in my fifth year of teaching. I chose to go to graduate school at SE because I wanted to continue my education and become an even better educator. My current plans include getting my graduate degree and staying in education for at least another few years. My future plans include branching out and working for a company that specializes in curriculum development.

Knowledge Constructor indicator 3a asks students to plan and employ effective research strategies to locate information and other resources for their intellectual or creative pursuits. Fifth-grade students could address the Colorado writing standard 10- 1-a-iii by discovering and researching accurate information that matches a social issue they are passionate about. Some examples of social issues they could research are gun violence, global warming, homelessness, animal abuse, and more. Students will find examples of world leaders, speakers, celebrities, or historical figures who have spoken out about their social issue and include their work in their final projects. Students would make presentations about their social issue and present them to their classes using Canva or Google Slides. If allowed, they also have the option to post their presentations online in video form through Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube. Students will be encouraged to make comments and ask questions to extend their understanding of the social issues that will be presented.

This type of assignment for fifth graders is not only relevant to the standards, but also relevant to their everyday lives. According to the Triple E Framework, for students to use technology for learning purposes, it needs to be productive and meaningful. I believe my lesson and the technologies I am allowing them to use meet all three Triple E Framework criteria. This is because my lesson allows for students to become active & social learners, creates multiple paths for students to demonstrate their understanding of the content, and creates a bridge between their school learning and their everyday life experiences.
